Tirta Gangga

Tirta Gangga, which translates to “holy water of the Ganges,” is a former royal palace located in eastern Bali, Indonesia. This stunning water garden sanctuary is a testament to the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Karangasem Kingdom. The palace, with its unique blend of Balinese and Chinese architectural styles, offers visitors a tranquil escape with its maze of ponds, fountains, and lush gardens.

History and Significance

The Tirta Gangga Water Palace was built in 1946 by the last king of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. Originally, it was a private recreational retreat for the royal family and a sacred place for religious rituals. The name itself reflects the deep spiritual significance, as the water from its natural springs is considered holy and is used in local religious ceremonies. The palace was almost completely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 but has since been rebuilt and restored, preserving its status as an important cultural landmark

Attractions and Features

Tirta Gangga is a sprawling complex that spans 1.2 hectares and is laid out on three distinct levels.

• Lower Level: This area features two large ponds, a towering 10-meter-high water fountain, and a famous stone walkway that allows visitors to cross the water. These ponds are home to a collection of friendly koi fish that can be fed.

• Middle Level: The middle level is where you’ll find the public swimming pools, where visitors can take a refreshing dip in the cool, clear spring water.

• Upper Level: The highest level contains the original country house of the former king and the sacred spring that feeds the entire water palace. This level also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding rice paddies and Mount Agung.

The palace grounds are adorned with intricate stone carvings of mythological figures, statues, and pavilions. The gardens feature a variety of tropical plants and trees, including a large banyan tree that shades the sacred spring.

Location and Visiting Information

Tirta Gangga is located in the village of Ababi, in the Karangasem Regency of East Bali. It’s about a two-hour drive from Denpasar and is situated on the main road to other popular attractions like Lempuyang Temple and Amed. It’s often visited as part of a day tour of East Bali.

The palace is open to the public, though it can get crowded, especially during midday. For a more peaceful experience and better photography opportunities, it’s recommended to visit early in the morning. An entrance fee is required to enter the palace grounds, with an additional fee if you wish to use the swimming pools. Fish food can also be purchased to feed the koi in the ponds.
